Smart recorded top speed 222 mbps at Tanay Rizal cell site

Manila, Philippines - PLDT wireless subsidiary Smart Communications(Smart) has fired up its first batch of three LTE (Long-Term Evolution) cell sites using the 700-MHz spectrum, and recorded the top speed of 222 mbps located in Tanay Rizal.

The three Smart cell sites was located in Tanay Rizal; Matina , Davao City and Manggahan area in Pasig City, where recorded 101 Mbps on a single band, 700-Mhz LTE set-up. Smart is planning to fired up 360 cell sites with 700 MHz this year, initially in Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao. The project is part of the three-year program of the company, aim to provide faster , affordable, and reliable internet service to public all over the country. The company also bringing 4.5G in Boracay last April this year.

Peak speeds refer to the maximum possible data rate that maybe achieved, on a single-user basis. The actual speeds that maybe experienced under normal circumstances will be influenced by the number of users being served by a particular base station.

Smart and Globe previously announced it would deploy LTE on 700-MHz, in order the powerful frequency with the most advanced mobile phone technology. The low-band  700 Mhz has a longer range and provides better indoor coverage than high band frequencies.

According to Joachim Horn, PLDT and Smart chief technology and information advisor, "Combined with other frequency bands, LTE on 700-MHz will help expand the coverage and enhance the capacity of our data network at a faster pace."

"The other part of our strategy for the rapid deployment of LTE is to push the availability of more affordable LTE smartphones, pocket WiFis, and tablets using 700 MHz. This combination of advanced network, technology, and devices will enable us to provide the best digital experience to our customers across the country," he said.

Here's the initial list of devices compatible to the 700 MHz spectrum which you will enjoy the high-speed LTE on this frequency: Samsung models Tab S2, Galaxy Note 5, S6,S6 edge,J5 2016, J7 2016, A5 2016, A7 2016, and Tab A 2016, and O+ models Sonic and Xfinite. Also available are five smartphones models of Huawei: GR3, GR5, GR8, P9 Lite and P9+.

Local manufacturer Myphone is introducing nine handset models and a pocket WiFi that will run on 700 MHz by September this year. The service will also be available to Alcatel Shine users by September, and to users of the iPhone 6, 6 plus, 6s, 6s plus, and SE, upon release of the new Apple iOS sometimes this year.

Smart is accelerating its LTE deployment across the country, part of PLDT's P43 billion three-year network expansion program, plus the USD$100 million to utilize the frequencies now available to Smart, as a result of the recent acquisition of San Miguel Corporation's telecoms business.

The expansion efforts are seen to broaden, by 2016, Smart's 3G and LTE coverage. On Twitter, PLDT and Smart Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Manuel V. Pangilinan said, "That's only 3 base stations which are 700Mhz enabled so far. We will build more than 200 in key sites nationwide by year end."
