Nine sugarcane workers massacred in Sagay, Negros Occidental

Nine people was killed including women and minors by a group of unidentified gunmen on Saturday, October 20 night in Hacienda Nene, Barangay Bulanon in Sagay City, Negros Occidental.


The team of investigators lead by Chief Insp. Roberto Mansueto, head of Sagay City Police Station proceeded to the area. The teams learned that the farm owned by Carmen Tolentino was occupied by NFSW members, a day after the harvest. All the victims was resting at their tent shelters around 9:30 p.m when the gunmen arrived.

According to one of the survivor, "The gunmen only arrived on foot. The workers did not immediately notice them because it is a remote area. It is not a city proper and vehicles hardly pass by." Senior Supt. Rodolfo Castil told MB.

The victims are identified as Marchtel Sumcad, 17; Eglicerio Villegas,36; Jomarie Ughayon Jr.,17;Angelipe Arsenal; Bingbing Bantigue;Necnec Dumaguit;Dodong Laurencio; Morena Mendoza and Pater.

Other victims were stabbed to death and three others was burned according to the report.

Rights group condemned the incident and called a separate investigation on the Commission on human Rights.
