A Filipina American has put into the spotlight after receiving Emmy award at the 71st Los Angeles Area Emmys, giving her time to cover plastic pollution in the ocean.
Shanna Mendiola, the NBC4 Southern California's meteorologist weekday morning newscast "Today in LA," received the Environmental News Story award for a two-part report on "Plastic and Out Oceans." She won together with Andres Fernando Pruna, the cameraman, editor, and producer for the report.
"Emmy! Overwhelmed with gratitude and honored beyond words. There are very few women and women of color as a whole in Broadcast Meteorology, and to be Filipino American and win this Emmy— it’s a win for the community and hopefully inspiration for many to follow!" She wrote on her Instagram post.
"I also hope the story Andres Pruna and I put together about plastic pollution in our oceans raises awareness for this issue and gets more people talking about how we can work together to make a change," She added
The investigative report came about as a responsibility to raise awareness for environmental issues that affect our planet.
“Sadly, you don’t have to go very far to find trash on our washing up on Southern California beaches, or even see it in the water….Cities are making small changes like banning plastic straws and bags, but it’s not enough. I hope the story my producer and photographer Andres Pruna and I put together educates the public about the issue and gets more people talking about how we can work together to make a change,” Mendiola told the Asian Journal.
Mendiola has been the morning meteorologist since March 2017 and joined NBC in 2014, which has given her opportunities to fill in for Al Roker on the “Today” show and other national broadcasts. She also worked for TV stations in Denver, San Francisco, and Oregon.
