DOH raises alarm to growing STD epidemic as cases hit as young as 11-year-olds

Infections in the Philippines from sexually transmitted disease hit a record high and threatens the young once. According to the Department of Health (DOH)-Central Visayas as quoted in the Sunstar report, an alarming numbers as young as 11 and 12 has STDs.
According to DOH-Central Visayas HIV/Aids program coordinator Dr. Van Philip Baton said the Sunstar, these children engage in sex to earn money but are unaware of the risks of what they are doing.

The Sunstar reported that the rate of HIV infection among those 15 to 24 years old is rising, while a group from 25 to 34 year-old still has a record high based on the data of the Epidemiology Bureau. Meanwhile, National data recorded an average of 35 persons got infected per day this year.

Central Visayas has the fourth highest number with 5,982 cases since 1984, only 2,485 have undergone treatment, which is offered for free.
