House of the Dragon is HBO's new Game of Thrones spinoff

Game of Thrones may be over, but this won't be the last. Good news! HBO just announced a new Game of Thrones spinoff series, House of the Dragon.

On its Twitter account, the new series is created by Ryan Condal (Colony), together with George R.R. Martin set to co-executive produce.

#HouseOfTheDragon, a #GameofThrones prequel is coming to @HBO.

House of the Dragon is based on Martin's 2018 book Fire and Blood, a history of House Targaryen as they fight through a civil war. The new series is expected to be set roughly 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

It appears that HBO's decision to produced House of the Dragon came just hours after the network canceled a separate in-the-works Game of Thrones prequel starring Naomi Watts, the Rollingstone report.
