Over 7,000 nurses, health workers could lose jobs due to DOH budget cut

Over 7,000 nurses and health workers under the Department of Health program feared to lose their jobs after a P9.39-billion cut in the proposed 2020 budget of the Department of Health, these include the P6.05-billion reduction in the allocation for the Human Resources for Health Deployment Program, or HRHDP.
Senator Ralph Recto said apart from more than 7,000 nurses, dentist and medical technologist would be affected of massive lay-off in 2020, he warned. Recto said that to be able to retain the 26,389 health workers in 2020, the P16-billion budget allocation should be granted.

"Seven thousand one hundred-seven public health nurses are feared to lose their jobs in the coming year, the same number as islands in the country," Recto said.

"If not reversed, it will turn us into an archipelago of dismissed nurses. It is a kind of hospital discharge that us the most unkind," he added.

The DOH's proposed budget for 2020 is P160.15 billion, lower than P169.45 billion in 2019.
