Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna attended Sunday mass, receive communion hours before the fatal crash, priest says

Hours before the tragic helicopter crash happened, Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna attended the Sunday mass and took communion, ABC-7 reports.

According to father Steve Sallot, a Eucharist priest at the Our Lady Queen of Angeles church, Bryant family attends Sunday church was one of the last to see him alive, he told ABC-7.

"He was here before the 7 a.m. mass and that's our first mass of the day. So he would obviously have been in the prayer chapel before that and he was leaving about 10 to 7," Sallot said.

The helicopter crash was reported at 9:47 a.m. that morning in the Calabasas area.

Parishioners at Our Lady Queen of Angels prayed a rosary for the lives lost.

Bishop Timothy Freyer: Kobe was an icon who inspired us through his words and actions to set our goals, work hard and achieve our dreams. He was a committed Catholic who loved his family and loved his faith. A longtime Orange County resident and parishioner in our Diocese, Kobe would frequently attend Mass and sit in the back of the church so that his presence would not distract people from focusing on Christ’s Presence.
