Lapu-lapu's new portrait released and this is how he actually looked!

A new portrait of Lapu-Lapu, the Filipino legendary hero was unveiled by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) in preparation for the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines.

The painting was created by Bulacan artist Carlo Caacbay in a striking realistic-photo paint style that almost resembles to a photograph - which appeared to be a muscular middle-aged Lapu-Lapu, wearing several tattoos.

Behind him is a beach, depicting Mactan, the location of the fateful battle on 27 April 1521.

According to NHCP, the age of Lapu-Lapu was subscribed to the recent findings of historian Danilo Gerona. His book Ferdinand Magellan: The Armada de Maluco and the European Discovery of the Philippines(2016) claims that Lapu-Lapu was very old. Gerona cited the 1563 book of Portuguese historian Gaspar Correa titled Lendas da India.

“The tattoos indicate the bearer’s experiences, achievements, and triumphs in battles and sea encounters,” said Eufemio O. Agbayani III of the NHCP.

"To signify his dignity as a warrior-leader, Lapulapu is shown holding a kampilan (a noted Visayan bladed weapon) and wearing a regal red vest and pants," NHCP added.

NHCP hope that the new portrait would helped "Filipinos in visualizing early Philippine history that is grounded on historical, cultural, and archeological research."
