PH Navy's first missile-capable ship arriving May 23

The Philippine Navy's first ship with missile defense system is expected to arrive May 23 from South Korea.

The future frigate BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150) is scheduled to depart May 18, according to Philippines Navy chief Vice Admiral Giovanni Carlo Bacordo during an interview with dzRH on Friday (May 15).

“This is our first brand new fighting ship,” he said.

The ship is set for technical inspection and acceptance in Subic after the delivery was delayed late April due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is the first time that we will have this kind of vessel in the Philippine Navy,” Vice Admiral Bacordo added.

He described that the ship is capable of anti-air warfare, anti surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare and anti-electronic warfare.

The Philippine government signed a deal with Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for the construction of two frigates for P16 billion.
