Philippines suspends the use of AstraZeneca vaccine for under 60s

Philippines announced on Thursday that it was suspending the use of AstraZeneca vaccines for those age under 60 following blood clots incidents reported overseas.

The Department of Health said they are following the recommendation from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to temporarily halt the use of AstraZeneca vaccines. The announcement came after the surge in coronavirus cases in the country that sparked concern on another setback for its vaccination drive.

"While we have not seen such incidents in the country, the FDA has recommended to temporarily suspend the use of the vaccine for persons below 60 years old as we await results of the review being done by our local experts, as well as the official guidance of the WHO," Food and Drug Administration director-general Eric Domingo said.

FDA Director-General Roland Eric Domingo said that the temporary suspension of the AstraZeneca vaccine does not mean that it is ineffective and is simply a precautionary measure.

"We continue to underscore that the benefits of vaccination continue to outweigh the risks and we urge everyone to get vaccinated when it's their turn,” Domingo added.

It also got 525,600 AstraZeneca doses through the Covax programme, most of which have been administered already, according to official data.

The country expects another three million AstraZeneca doses in the coming months.

Several countries in Europe had stopped the use of AstraZeneca's vaccine for younger recipients.

Oxford University also announced on Tuesday that it was suspending a trial of the AstraZeneca vaccine, "whilst there are no safety concerns in the paediatric clinical trial, we await additional information from the MHRA on its review of rare cases of thrombosis/thrombocytopaenia that have been reported in adults, before giving any further vaccinations in the trial," the university said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization in Geneva said its experts were also evaluating a possible link between the AstraZeneca vaccine and rare blood clots — and that it might have a “fresh, conclusive assessment” before Thursday.
