Austrian doctors amputates elderly patient's wrong leg

 It was a shocking 'human error' indeed! Surgeons at a northern Austrian hospital reportedly amputated an elderly man's 'wrong' leg.





The 82-year-old man who is suffering from many illness has to undergo surgery where his leg required amputation, but unfortunately the leg was incorrectly marked before the operation and the error was later discovered after a first bandage change. 





Freistadt Clinic in a town near Czech border has since issued a public apology, calling the incident a "disastrous combination of circumstances."





"We are deeply shocked that on Tuesday, May 18, despite quality assurance standards, the wrong leg of an 82-year old man...was amputated," the clinic said in statement.




According to the hospital, the man's right leg was removed instead of the left, and the investigation to the 'unfortunate circumstances' has been initiated. The patient's family have been already informed and the patient was offered psychological assistance because he still need to undergo another operation to remove his left leg.
