Nesthy Petecio clinches for silver Olympic medal in boxing

The Davao del Sur pride Nesthy Petecio finished with a silver medal on her featherweight final campaign in the Tokyo Olympics after losing to her rival Sena Irie of Japan via unanimous decision on Tuesday, Aug. 3.

Despite falling short of her golden bid, Petecio makes history as the first Filipina Olympic boxing medalist.

“Kinulang po tayo pero ginawa ko po ‘yung best sa taas ng ring po. Nakita niyo, humabol po ako…Humihingi po ako ng pasensiya kung silver lang po naiuwi ko. Ginawa ko po ‘yung lahat ng makakaya ko kanina,” an emotional Nesthy Petecio said.

The 29-year-old was determined for gold in the early action of the second round, but Irie has gained momentum to initiate the offensive move. The Japanese boxer who denied Petecio in Asia and Oceania qualifiers has once again repeated another win over the Filipina fighter with 29-28, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27.

Petecio also became the third Filipino boxer to win the silver medal following Anthony Villanueva in 1964 and Onyok Velasco in 1996.
