President Duterte announces retirement from politics

President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday announced that he was retiring from politics, saying he is listening to the voice of the Filipino. In an interview, Duterte said many Filipinos have expressed their opposition to his vice-presidential bid.

"The overwhelming sentiment of the Filipino is that I'm not qualified, and it would be a violation of the constitution," said Duterte. "In obedience  to the will of the people... I will follow what you wish and today I announce my retirement from politics."

His announcement came after Senator Bong Go filed his certificate of candidacy for Vice President in May 2022 elections.

Go was accompanied by President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday, an unexpected moved since Duterte was the one endorsed by their party PDP-Laban for VP position.

In his speech, Go said he decided to run for the post after Duterte withdrew his acceptance as nominated by PDP-Laban to run for vice president.

The 76-year-old Duterte wished Go the "best and good luck to his quest for the vice presidency."
