SARA DUTERTE WANTS MANDATORY MILITARY SERVICE FOR ALL FILIPINOS REACHING THE AGE OF 18

Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio said if elected vice president she will urged Congress to pass legislation that would make military service for all 18 years old Filipinos male or female, mandatory.

Citing example the mandatory military service in South Korea and Israel, she said that all Filipinos reaching the age of 18 must serve the country through the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

"Gagamitin ko ang aking opisina sa Office of the Vice President para kausapinang ating Congress to make military service for all 18 years old, male and female, mandatory in our country... Hindi ROTC lang na isang subject o isang weekend o isang buwan sa isang taon... pag tuntong mo ng 18 years old, you will be given a subsidy, you will be asked to serve our country doon sa ating Armed Forces of the Philippines."

Duterte statement came after Sangguniang Kabataan official asked her and Bongbong Marcos in an online interview: "As president and vice president, how do you intent to use your respective offices as platforms to spring young people into action and become part of nation building? Drawing from your LGU experience, are there programs you want to scale up?”

Currently, the military training in the country was made optional through the National Service training Program (NSTP) Act of 2001 (Republic Act No. 9163).

The program has became voluntary in 2002 following the killing of University of Santo Tomas sophomore cadet Mark Welson Chua in 2001 after he exposed corruption in his school's military training program.
