SPACEX SET TO LAUNCH FIRST 'STARLINK' SATELLITE IN PH BEFORE DUTERTE TERM ENDS

The Philippines will be the first in South East Asia (SEA) to experience SpaceX's Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network constellation popularly known as Starlink.

According to the Department of Trade and Industry, SpaceX Corp. eyes to launch the first gateway for its low-orbit satellites to provide internet access before President Rodrigo Duterte's term will end next month.

"Ang target nila makapag-bukas ng kahit isa, unang gateway out of the three planned gateways, mabuksan na before the end of the term of our Pangulong Duterte," DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez told a Laging Handa briefing.

Lopez added that Elon Musk-led company is currently registering with the Securities and Exchange Commission in securing permits with the National Telecommunications Commission and Department of information and Communications Technology.

"Ang hinihintay na lang natin, 'yung mag-register din sila sa Board of Investments,” the economic official said. The official noted that a local law firm is helping the American company accomplish all necessary requirements.

ApaceX is currently establishing a local Filipino entity that will be their wholly-owned subsidiary and is targeting to deploy three gateways in the first phase of their launch. This will bring high-speed satellite broadband connectivity to customers, particularly to areas where connectivity has been difficult.
