After two long years, reigning champion Ateneo crosses paths with rival La Salle in the opening match of the UAAP Season 84 women's volleyball on Thursday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The La Salle Lady Spikers overpowered the Ateneo Lady Eagles in four sets, 22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-20, in the first rival showdown.
The rookie Alleiah Malaluan and Baby Jyne Soreño kicked off its campaign on high note at the expense of defending champion Ateneo.
Soreño led the way as she rake-off 17 points with 13 attacks, three blocks and ace off bench.
Meanwhile, Malaluan scored 15 points in her UAAP debut with a crucial two attack points in the fourth set.
"Laging ganyan si Jyne. Maging first six man siya o coming off the bench, 'yung energy niya is the same. We're trying to adjust pa sa first set at kita naman ni coach na nag-work si Jyne. She always delivers," La Salle assistant coach Benson Bocboc said in praise to the performance of Soreño.
