Joanna Camelle Mercado was crowned Miss United Continents 2022 during the pageant finals held in Portoviejo, Ecuador on Saturday, August 6 (Friday, August 7 in Manila).
The 26-year-old resort ambassador from Floridablanca, Pampanga, holds a bachelor's degree in secondary education and worked as a teacher.
Six years after Jeslyn Santos became the first Filipino and Asian woman to win the Miss United Continents crown. Camelle Mercado is the second Filipina to bring home the second victory in the Latin-dominated global tilt.
Mercado beat 24 other entries in the competition usually dominated by Latin American countries.
Before the pageant's coronation night, Mercado glimpsed back at the time she joined Miss World Philippines in 2019 when thousands of viewers witnessed her trip on stage while in her evening gown.
The said pageant only welcomed participants from countries in North, Central, and South America. But after gaining wide international reception, organizers expanded the competition worldwide to accommodate delegates from other continents in 2013 and renamed it Miss United Continents.
Host representative Ivanova Velez finished second, followed by Colombia’s Karen Ortiz, and Venezuela’s Lis Arbalaez. Paraguay’s Gretha Matiauda was fourth runner-up, while Mexico’s Ayram Ortiz rounded up the winner’s circle as fifth runner-up. Ivanova Vélez of Ecuador was named first runner-up while Karen Ortíz of Colombia finished as second runner-up.
The representatives of Venezuela, Lis Arbelaes, Paraguay, Gretha Matiauda, and Mexico, Ayram Ortíz were third, fourth, and fifth runners-up, respectively.
Completing the Top 10 were Brazil, Larissa Barros, Peru, Kiara Chaud, Panama, Guadalupe Ureña, and South Africa, Jané Bacher.
Founded by Maria del Carmen de Aguayo in 2006, this year's competition was the 15th edition of the Ecuador-based international pageant.
Anairis Cadavid of Colombia, who won in 2019, indulged her crown to her successor at the end of the event.
