The name of Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle is a buzz as one of the top contender to become the next pope, according to a Catholic Herald report.
Tagle, a former archbishop of Manila and Hungarian Cardinal Peter Erdo, the archbishop of Eszteergom-Budapest, are the leading contenders to succeed Pope Francis.
The report came out following speculations that pope Francis will soon step down as leader of the Catholic Church due to his failing health conditions.
In the report, it also said that the Pope also favored Italian Cardinal and Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.
Despite of the leading names that have surfaced online, the report cautioned about too much enthusiasm about the Church being too liberal, as the College of Cardinals, being less and less European, is still conservative in nature.
Tagle was appointed by Pope Francis as one of the 22 members of Vatican City's Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of Sacraments, headed by Cardinal-designated Arthur Roche.
He was also appointed in 2019 as the prefect of the Vatican's Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.
