SOCIAL INFLUENCERS TO FACE CHARGES AGAINST DAMAGING PESO BILLS

Social media influencers were facing charges after publishing videos of money getting ripped, punched, pinned, and used to wipe shoes. Four of these influencers are tiktokers and the other one is a vlogger.




These influencers were charged before the Quezon City Prosecutor's office for allegedly destroying currency notes.




One of the public figures is who is a foreign national. Most of his contents are mixed with pranks with a heart. But one of his content that grabbed attention was tearing the twenty peso bill for his vlog.


Representatives from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ payments and currency investigation group and the police Anti-Cybercrime Group filed charges of destroying central bank notes and coins under Presidential Decree 247, unlawful use of means of publication, and unlawful utterances under the Revised Penal Code and violation of Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act against the suspects, who were only identified through their social media accounts.

A complaint was filed against a magician named who punched a hole into a 1000-peso bill with a pen. The rest of the complaints were to the man who used a 50-peso bill as a funnel in pouring oil into a motorcycle engine, one who stapled a 100-peso bill to a plastic basketball rim, and to the man who wiped 500-peso bills on his shoe before throwing the cash to the ground.



All videos obtained by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas uploaded by said social media influencers will be used as evidence against them.


Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said the destruction of Philippine banknotes and coins is punishable by a fine of not more than PHP20,000.00 or imprisonment of not more than five years.
