LTO ANNOUNCES EXTENSION OF DRIVER'S LICENSE VALIDITY AMID PLASTIC CARDS SHORTAGE

Following to the ongoing nationwide shortage of plastic card, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) has decided to extend the driver's license validity.

Land Transportation Office chief Jay Art Tugade made a Facebook message on Friday in response to public backlash over a first announcement of a supposed issuance of temporary driver's licenses printed on piece of paper as the agency forecast appeared that it will run out of plastic card supply on the last week of April 2023.

"Many of our countrymen have already spoken. As a response to your suggestions, we are announcing that all driver's licenses set to expire by April 24, 2023 shall have their validity extended until Oct. 31, 2023," according to Tugade.

"We, here at LTO, decided to do this because we no longer want to add to our motorist's hassle," he added.

Many netizens earlier expressed their disappointment pointed out that driver's license on printed paper would easily deteriorate. The plastic card shortage is reported to affect around 5.2 million motorists.

The supply problem was caused by the department order in January that instructed all the procurement involving P50 million and above should be conducted by the DOTr (Department of Transportation) central office.
