Fast-food giant faces backlash over employee's street hawking

Chowking, a beloved Filipino fast-food chain known for its delectable Chinese-Filipino fusion cuisine, has found itself at the center of a controversy after a video surfaced showing an employee resorting to street hawking to boost sales.

The video, shared by TikTok user Maria Cabral, depicts a female Chowking worker traversing the streets on foot, peddling the restaurant's products directly to potential customers in its branch in Davao.

The employee's actions, driven by instructions from her manager to enhance sales, have sparked outrage among netizens.

Many have condemned the practice as exploitative and a violation of labor rights. Critics argue that the company should be responsible for promoting its products and increasing sales, not by forcing its employees to take on such demeaning tasks.

The incident has cast a shadow over Chowking's reputation, prompting calls for the company to address the issue and ensure that its employees are treated with respect and dignity.

Chowking, on its released statement  vows action following employee street hawking controversy

"The Chowking Management has received feedback from a concerned customer regarding an activity conducted by one of our stores in Davao pertaining to outside-of-store order taking," the statement reads.

"We assure our customers and the public that we are treating this matter seriously. As such, we have asked the store to place the said activity on hold while the guidelines to ensure compliance with our standards are undergoing review. Further, the concerned team member continues to be a valued member of the store.

"At Chowking, upholding ethical standards in conducting business is a core commitment, and the safety and well-being of our team members remain our top priority," it added.
