MANILA, PHILIPPINES - The UST Tigers and CSB Lady Blazers emerged as the champions of the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) Challenge Cup on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
In a thrilling men's final, the UST Tigers overcame the Cignal HD Spikers in a five-set upset, 20-25, 25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 15-13. Joshua Ybañez, a 5-foot-6 standout, played a pivotal role in UST's victory, showcasing his impressive all-around skills.
Meanwhile, the CSB Lady Blazers dominated the women's division, defeating the UP Fighting Maroons in straight sets, 25-18, 25-18, 25-13.
The Lady Blazers, the reigning National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) champions, controlled the match from start to finish, securing their second consecutive title.
"We joined the Challenge Cup to prepare for the NCAA, and we're thrilled to come out as champions," said CSB coach Gerry Yee. "This victory is a huge boost for our team heading into the NCAA season."
PNVF president Ramon "Tats" Suzara expressed his gratitude to the participating teams and commended their dedication and passion throughout the tournament.
"It's been an incredible three weeks of volleyball action, and I'm grateful for the enthusiasm of the athletes and teams from all over the country," said Suzara.
The PNVF Challenge Cup served as the penultimate major tournament for the federation in 2023. Next up on the calendar is the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Challenge, which will bring together the world's top beach volleyball players in Santa Rosa, Laguna, starting on Thursday, December 1, 2023.
