Mayon Volcano Spews Ash and Steam in Brief Phreatic Eruption

Mayon Volcano in Albay spewed ash and steam for four minutes on Sunday, February 4th, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). No injuries have been reported.

The phreatic eruption, caused by the interaction of water and hot magma, produced a booming sound, rockfall, and brief pyroclastic density currents. Volcanic ash reached 1,200 meters and drifted southwest.

"Phreatic eruptions are sudden and unpredictable," Phivolcs emphasized, urging the public to remain outside the 6-kilometer permanent danger zone.

While ashfall could potentially affect nearby towns, Phivolcs has not yet received confirmation. They continue to monitor the situation.

Mayon remains under Alert Level 2, indicating moderate unrest with potential for small and short-lived eruptive events.
