Negros Island Region (NIR) Act Gets a Resounding Yes!

In a historic move, the Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill No. 2507, creating the Negros Island Region (NIR)! This new region will encompass the provinces of Negros Occidental (including Bacolod City), Negros Oriental, and Siquijor.

The NIR Act aims to achieve several key goals:

  • Decentralize administration: By establishing a dedicated regional government, the NIR will empower local communities and accelerate cultural and social development.

  • Improve service delivery: Residents will no longer have to travel long distances to Iloilo or Cebu for government services. Easier access to regional offices in Negros itself will streamline processes and save time.

Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri, a key author of the bill, highlighted the challenges faced by residents who currently need to travel to other regions for government transactions, especially during bad weather. He sees the NIR as a dream come true for the people of Negros and Siquijor, bringing essential services closer to their doorsteps.

Senator JV Ejercito, the bill's sponsor, expressed gratitude to his colleagues and congratulated the beneficiaries. He emphasized the long-standing desire for a Negros Island Region, finally coming to fruition after decades.

Senator Francis Tolentino praised the NIR Act as a monumental step forward. He believes the new region will not only improve governance but also foster socio-economic development by streamlining the delivery of essential government services.

The next step for the NIR Act is its passage into law. Once enacted, a technical working group will be formed to oversee the region's establishment. This group will include representatives from various government agencies and local officials.
