#WalangPasok: Negros Occidental Suspends Classes Due to Expected Heatwave

Heat Concerns Prompt School Closures

The recent heatwave gripping the Philippines has led to concerns about student and educator well-being. To prioritize health and safety, several local government units in Negros Occidental have proactively opted to suspend classes for the next two days (March 11-12, 2024).


 

List of School Closures:

  • Bacolod City:
  •  
    • All levels (Elementary to High School) - Classes suspended for both days.
    • John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation: Transition to online platforms (JeL or similar) for all year levels.
    • Bacolod City College: Shift to online instruction for college classes.
    • University of St. La Salle: Face-to-face classes resume for higher education units only.
    • La Consolacion College Integrated School: Students observe home study on March 11-12.

    • Colegio San Agustin: In-person classes canceled from pre-school to college levels (except for clinical duties and internships in the College of Health and Allied Professions). Classes will continue via synchronous online modality.
    • University of Negros Occidental Recoletos: Suspension applies only to the Integrated School (face-to-face classes).
  • Carlos Hilado Memorial State University (All Campuses): Classes suspended for March 11-12.
  • Murcia: Classes canceled (Elementary to Senior High School) for both days.
  • Kabankalan City: Classes suspended (Elementary to Secondary Level) for both days.
  • Talisay City: Classes canceled (Elementary to Senior High School Levels) for both days.
  • Silay City: Classes suspended for all levels (including teachers and school workers) for both days.
  • EB Magalona: Classes canceled for all levels (both Public and Private Schools) for both days.

This decision highlights the importance of safeguarding students, teachers, and staff members during the anticipated heatwave. The high heat index could lead to health risks like heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Parents and guardians are urged to stay vigilant and take necessary measures to protect their children from the harmful effects of extreme temperatures. These precautions include:

  • Ensuring proper hydration
  • Encouraging children to wear appropriate clothing
  • Limiting exposure to direct sunlight for extended periods
