Barefoot Wonder: Leyte Runner Shines at Palarong Pambansa

A 13-year-old from Leyte has captured the nation's heart after clinching a silver medal in the secondary girl's 3,000m event at the Palarong Pambansa 2024. Chrishia Mae Tajarros, a Grade 7 student from Matag-ob National High School, defied expectations by schieving this feat barefoot.

Tajarro's solver medal is a historic win for Eastern Visayas, as she is the region's first-ever medalist in the Palarong Pambansa. Her coaches, Darlyn Rea Azucenas and Damaso Oledan Jr., revealed that the young athlete is accustomed to running without shoes, even during international competitions like the ASEAN Games. She feels faster barefoot," Azucenas explained.

Despite Tajarro's preferences for running barefoot, her coaches emphasized that they provide her with necessary support and training. Oledan clarified, "While she performs better barefoot, we ensure that all our athletes, especially those from the Leyte Sports Academy, receive proper care and training.

This year's Palarong Pambansa marked Tajarro's debut, and she dedicated her solver medal to her family. Overcoming registration issues that prevented her from competing in the previous year's Palaro, the determined athlete persevered through challenges to achieve her remarkable success.

Asia Paraase from Central Visayas took home the gold medal, while Mary Jane Pagayon from Davao Region secured the bronze.

Tajarros' inspiring journey is a testament to her talent, resilience, and the unwavering support of her coaches and family. As she sets her sights on the golden medal in future competitions, the nation eagerly awaits her next triumph.
