In a heartwarming gesture that touched the hearts of many, Filipino comedian and TV host Vice Ganda removed his wig on live television to show support for a contestant on the noontime show "It's Showtime" who is battling alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss.
The contestant, April, shared her struggles with alopecia during the Friday, July 19 episode of the show. Moved by her story, Vice decided to take off his wig in a symbolic act of solidarity and encouragement.
"If this will help April gain even a little bit of confidence, then why not?" Vice said before removing his wig. "For a long time, I've been so afraid of this, I didn't show myself without a wig. I've reached a point where I no longer care, because there is someone who loves me dearly even without my wig," the comedian revealed.
Vice also emphasized that he already feels secure with the love and acceptance he receives from his family.
"I'm not affected anymore by the insults I get when I don't have my wig. Wig or no wig, there are people who love me, right? Wig or no wig, there are people who accept me. Aside from Ion, my mom loves me, my siblings love me, my family loves me, and Lord loves me," Vice remarked.
Vice and April became emotional as they embraced each other on stage.
"In time. In your time. Don't rush. In your time," the host advised the contestant.
Vice added: "this is not for me, but for people like you."
The rest of the hosts were also moved to tears as they witnessed the heartwarming moment.
Fans online were quick to express their admiration for Vice's gesture for April.
"Literally in tears here, Ms.@vicegandako.We love you for the person you are," one fan said on social media.
"It's Showtime has stood the test of time, thanks to its social relevancy and its inclusivity. To the Showtime family, we love you!" another fan wrote.
Vice has always been vocal about raising awareness about alopecia. Back in 2019, he showcased a performance dubbed as "Hair Story" for his Magpasikat performance during the tenth anniversary of the program to raise awareness about the condition.
