The artwork "Under the Mango Tree" by Fernando Amorsolo was sold for a record-breaking ₱57.6 million at Leon Gallery's The Magnificent September Action. This surpasses the previous record held by Amorsolo's "Mango Gatherers," which sold for ₱46.7 million in 2018.
"Under the Mango Tree" is a 1929 oil-on-canvas painting that measures 38 x 38 inches. It depicts Filipinos enjoying a respite under a mango tree in a vibrant field. The painting was once part of the collection of Edward J. Nell, an industrialist and pioneer of air-conditioning in the Philippines.
The sale of "Under the Mango Tree" marks a new milestone for Filipino art and a testament to Amorsolo's enduring legacy as the National Artist of the Philippines.
