Canada Tightens Immigration Rules to Curb Temporary Residents

Ottawa has announced a series of measures to reduce the number of temporary residents in Canada, including international students and foreign workers.

In an effort to address concerns about strained housing, jobs, and social services, the Canadian government has decided to cut the number of study permits issued to international students in 2025. This year’s allocation of 485,000 permits will be further reduced to 437,000 next year, marking a significant decrease from the 500,000 issued in 2023.

Additionally, the government is tightening rules for work permits granted to spouses of international students and foreign workers. These changes aim to limit the number of dependents accompanying temporary residents, thereby reducing the overall strain on resources.

To combat a surge in fraudulent or rejected asylum claims, Ottawa will also be implementing stricter checks for travel visas. This measure is intended to prevent individuals from entering Canada under false pretenses.

These restrictions are part of the government's broader plan to reduce the proportion of temporary residents in the Canadian population from 6.8 percent to 5 percent. The move comes in response to concerns about the impact of high immigration levels on the country's infrastructure and social systems.
