The Ramon Magsaysay Awards Foundation has announced that renowned anime director Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli is a recipient of the prestigious 2024 Ramon Magsaysay Award.
Miyazaki's recognition is not surprising, given his long and illustrious career marked by numerous accolades. As one of the most beloved and influential anime directors of all time, his work with Studio Ghibli has captivated audiences worldwide.
While the Ramon Magsaysay Award might seem like a Filipino honor, it is actually a prestigious award open to citizens of Asian countries, established in 1957. Often referred to as the "Nobel Prize of Asia," the award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to society.
Joining Miyazaki as 2024 honorees are:
- Farwiza Farhan from Indonesia
- Karma Phuntsho from Bhutan
- Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong from Vietnam
- Rural Doctors Movement from Thailand
The 2024 Ramon Magsaysay Award ceremony will be held on November 16 at the Metropolitan Theatre in Manila. However, it remains uncertain whether Hayao Miyazaki will attend, as he has a history of avoiding award ceremonies. Even for the success of his latest film, The Boy and the Heron, Miyazaki chose not to participate in any award events, with Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki accepting the awards on his behalf.
