Pambalana in Filipino: Examples and Usage

Pambalana is a Filipino term that refers to common nouns or generic names. Unlike pangalan (proper nouns), pambalana don't refer to specific individuals, places, or things.
 
Pambalana: Karaniwang o batang ngalan ng tao, hayop, bagay, pook at pangyayari, nagsisimula sa maliit na titik.
 

 


Here are some examples of pambalana in Filipino:


People

  •     Tao - person
  •     Babae - woman
  •     Lalaki - man
  •     Bata - child
  •     Guro - teacher


Places

  •     Bahay - house
  •     Eskwelahan - school
  •     Parke - park
  •     Lungsod - city
  •     Bansa - country


Things


  •     Aklat - book
  •     Tasa - cup
  •     Upuan - chair
  •     Kotse - car
  •     Telepono - telephone


How to use pambalana:

  •     As subjects: Ang tao ay naglalakad. (The person is walking.)
  •     As objects: Bumili ako ng aklat. (I bought a book.)
  •     As complements: Siya ay isang mabuting guro. (He is a good teacher.)


Note: Pambalana can also be used as adjectives when they describe nouns. For example:

    Pula - red (adjective)

    Malaki - big (adjective)

    Pulang kotse - red car (pambalana used as adjective)

    Malaking bahay - big house (pambalana used as adjective)
