20 Filipino Women Rescued from Surrogacy Trafficking in Cambodia

The Cambodian National Police successfully rescued 20 Filipino women in Kandal Province last September 23. The women had been trafficked into the country to serve as surrogate mothers, according to the Philippine Embassy in Phnom Penh.

Of the 20 victims, 13 are pregnant and currently undergoing medical care in a local hospital. Seven others are awaiting repatriation.

Authorities are still investigating the entity responsible for recruiting these women. Initial interviews suggest that a person of unknown identity and nationality lured the women to Cambodia through online means. The recruiter, using a false name, promised the women employment in another Southeast Asian country but ultimately sent them to Cambodia, where surrogacy is illegal.

At the time of their rescue, the women were being cared for by a local "nanny" along with four women from a neighboring country.

The Philippine Embassy has provided prenatal support to the rescued victims and will continue to work with Cambodian authorities to ensure a swift resolution of the case.

While there is no specific law against surrogacy in the Philippines, existing laws and policies do not regulate the practice.
