PH Shines Bright as Host of 2024 ICF Dragon Boat World Championships

The Philippines has solidified its position as a premier destination for international sporting events. The upcoming 2024 International Canoe Federation Dragon Boat World Championships set to take place in Puerto Princesa City from October 31 to November 3 is a testament to the country's capability to host such prestigious competitions.

This marks the first time the event will be held in Southeast Asia, attracting over 30 countries and more than 3,000 delegates. The opportunity to host the championships was extended to the Philippines in July 2023, and under the leadership of PCKDF President Leonora Escollante, the country swiftly mobilized to ensure a successful event.

With the support of Puerto Princesa Mayor Lucilo R. Bayron, the Philippines was able to secure the hosting rights and has been working tirelessly to prepare for the competition. The 2024 ICF Dragon Boat World Championships will feature 52 events, providing a platform for athletes from around the globe to showcase their skills.

Beyond the competitive aspect, the event also aims to raise awareness for climate action. By participating in the championships, athletes contribute to environmental preservation efforts.

Big Stakes for Philippine Paddlers

As the host country, the Philippine national team faces immense pressure to perform at their best. While President Escollante is confident in their abilities, she acknowledges the high stakes involved.

The championships serve as a qualifying event for the World Games in Chengdu, China, next year. The top 10 countries in the mixed small boat event will secure their spots in the World Games.

A Historic Achievement

Regardless of the outcome of the competition, the Philippines has already achieved a significant milestone by hosting the 2024 ICF Dragon Boat World Championships. It is a rare opportunity that showcases the country's potential as a sports tourism destination.

As President Escollante emphasizes, it is time for Philippine paddlers to shine on the world stage. The country's successful hosting of the event is a testament to its growing capabilities in the realm of international sports.
