In a thrilling come-from-behind victory, the Arellano Chiefs defeated the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers 81-77 on Tuesday in the NCAA Season 100 men's basketball tournament. Stepping up when the offense struggled, Basti Valencia spearheaded the win with a career-high tying 25 points, including 8 crucial points in the final quarter.
Valencia took charge in the closing minutes, sinking a clutch jump shot to tie the game and then following it up with a fadeaway that gave Arellano the lead. While teammate Jeadan Ongotan chipped in 17 points, Valencia's late surge proved decisive.
"Our offense wasn't clicking," Valencia admitted after the game. "But someone had to step up, so I went out there to help the team." He finished the game with a well-rounded performance, grabbing 5 rebounds, dishing out 3 assists, and recording a block and a steal.
A key defensive play by JL Capulong in the dying seconds also played a crucial role in securing the win. Despite not having a strong offensive showing, Capulong blocked a shot by Marvin Raymundo, allowing Valencia to put the game away with a final basket.
"Basti does these things all the time in practice," said Arellano coach Chico Manabat. "This is a perfect example, and I'm glad his shots went in today."
With this win, the Chiefs (6-15) remain in contention for a Final Four spot, backed by their passionate fanbase. Coach Manabat credited the team's strategy of attacking the post effectively where they found an advantage against JRU.
Joshua Guiab led the scoring for JRU with 25 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome Valencia's heroics. The loss eliminates the Heavy Bombers (4-11) from Final Four contention, joining the San Sebastian Stags.
Final Score:
Arellano 81 - Valencia (25), Ongotan (17), Geronimo (12), Capulong (10)
JRU 77 - Guiab (20), Argente (15), Barrera (14)
