Indonesia Opens Door to Veloso's Transfer to the Philippines

Jakarta, Indonesia: The Indonesian government is currently considering a request from the Philippines to transfer convicted drug smuggler Mary Jane Veloso to a Philippine prison.

The Coordinating Ministry for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correction confirmed this development in a recent statement. While Indonesia upholds its legal sovereignty and the court's verdict, the ministry is exploring the possibility of a prisoner transfer as a gesture of constructive diplomacy.

Veloso, who was sentenced to death in Indonesia for drug trafficking, received a last-minute reprieve in 2015 after allegations that she was a victim of human trafficking.

If the transfer is approved, Veloso would continue serving her sentence in the Philippines under the conditions set by the Indonesian court. The Philippine government would then be responsible for her rehabilitation and any potential remission or clemency.

Both countries aim to strengthen international law enforcement cooperation through this potential prisoner transfer.
