The Province of Negros Occidental successfully concluded the 17th Negros Island Organic Farmers Festival themed “Abanse Kita sa Organiko nga Panguma” and the 2nd Terra Madre Visayas themed “RESTORING OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH NATURE” on November 23rd in Bacolod City.
The festival, a partnership with Terra Madre Visayas through Slow Food International and Community organizations, aimed to promote and preserve organic agriculture and traditional food practices in Negros Island.
Provincial Organic Agriculture Focal Person Dorlyn Vergara emphasized the festival's dual purpose: to showcase Negrense organic produce and to unite organic advocates to strengthen their initiatives.
Matthew John, President of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) Asia, highlighted the significance of the proposed National Organic Congress to be held in Negros next year. This event will elevate the province's efforts on a global stage and provide a platform for learning from international communities.
Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson expressed gratitude to all involved in the festival’s success. He emphasized the event's role in fostering collaboration and promoting initiatives crucial to the future of sustainable agriculture.
The closing ceremony recognized winners of the Best Booth Contest and PINAKA Contest, and also marked the ceremonial turnover of Composting Facilities for Biodegradable Waste (CFBW) to recipient farmers.
The festival's success, along with the Philippines' selection to host Terra Madre Asia Pacific 2025, positions Negros Occidental and the entire country as leaders in sustainable gastronomy tourism.
