Storm Surge Threatens Coastal Areas as Powerful Typhoon Pepito Enters PAR

A powerful typhoon, Pepito, is barreling towards the Philippines, prompting authorities to issue storm surge warnings for several coastal areas in Luzon and Visayas.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has raised concerns about significant flooding and high waves in low-lying coastal communities due to the approaching typhoon.

As of Friday afternoon, Typhoon Pepito was packing maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour and is expected to intensify further. The typhoon is projected to make landfall in the Bicol Region or Eastern Visayas over the weekend.

Areas at Risk of Storm Surge:

PAGASA has identified specific regions where storm surge could pose a serious threat:

  •     High Risk Areas (2.1 to 3.0 meters): Parts of Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Eastern Samar, Masbate, Northern Samar, Quezon, and Sorsogon.

  •     Moderate Risk Areas (1.0 to 2.0 meters): Portions of Aurora, Batangas, Biliran, Marinduque, Leyte, Romblon, and Samar.

Residents in these areas are advised to heed warnings from local authorities and take necessary precautions, such as evacuating to safer ground and avoiding coastal areas.

PAGASA continues to monitor the typhoon's track and intensity, and updates will be provided as needed.
