After a protracted and highly publicized legal battle spanning eight years, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have finally reached a divorce settlement. Jolie's lawyer, James Simon, confirmed to PEOPLE Magazine that the divorce papers were signed on December 30th, 2024.
"She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family," Simon said in a statement. "This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over."
The couple, who became romantically involved after co-starring in the 2005 film Mr. and Mrs. Smith, share six children. Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, citing irreconcilable differences and accusing Pitt of abusive behavior, including an alleged incident of physical and verbal assault on a private plane.
While the couple was declared legally single in 2019, their separation has been marked by contentious legal disputes, primarily centered around the ownership and sale of their shared winery, Miraval. Jolie accused Pitt of attempting to coerce her into signing a restrictive non-disclosure agreement (NDA) in exchange for purchasing her share of the winery. Pitt, in turn, sued Jolie for selling her stake without his consent, claiming a breach of contract.
The legal proceedings surrounding Miraval have been complex and acrimonious, with both sides accusing the other of bad faith and manipulative tactics. Jolie's legal team argued that the winery lawsuit was a retaliatory measure by Pitt, while his team claimed that Jolie had introduced an overly broad non-disparagement clause into their negotiations.
Despite the bitterness of the legal battles, a source close to Jolie told PEOPLE that she remains committed to maintaining a peaceful environment for their children. "She doesn’t speak ill of [Pitt] publicly or privately," the source stated. "She’s been trying hard to be light after a dark time."
This settlement brings a sense of closure to one chapter of this highly publicized divorce, although other legal matters, including custody arrangements, may still be ongoing. It marks a significant step towards resolving the complex issues that have entangled the former Hollywood power couple for nearly a decade.
