Ashfall from the Monday eruption of Mount Kanlaon in Negros Occidental reached multiple provinces in the Visayas region. The towering plume from the December 9 eruption was even visible from Iloilo City Hall.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) confirmed ashfall reports on Tuesday, December 10. The entire island province of Guimaras, situated between Negros and Panay Islands, was affected. All five towns of Guimaras—Jordan, Buenavista, Nueva Valencia, San Lorenzo, and Sibunag—experienced ashfall.
In Iloilo province, southern towns including Igbaras, Oton, Tigbauan, Guimbal, and Miag-ao were blanketed in ash. Even Iloilo City and the neighboring town of Pavia reported light ashfall.
Antique province wasn’t spared, with ashfall reaching the capital town of San Jose de Buenavista and the municipalities of Belison, Patnongon, and San Remigio.
In response to the volcanic activity, several local government units (LGUs) and schools in Iloilo, Guimaras, and Aklan suspended in-person classes on Tuesday.
