MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported increased activity from Kanlaon Volcano on December 25th, Christmas Day.
Sulfur Dioxide Emission Spikes
The volcano, located between Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental, released a significant amount of sulfur dioxide, a gas associated with volcanic activity. Phivolcs recorded 6,014 tons emitted on Wednesday, a sharp rise compared to the 3,585 tons measured the previous day.
Voluminous Plume and Ash Events
Visual observations revealed a "voluminous" plume reaching 400 meters in height, drifting in a westerly direction. Additionally, Phivolcs documented two ashing events on Christmas Day, each lasting for approximately an hour.
Volcanic Tremors and Earthquakes
The monitoring station also detected increased seismic activity around Kanlaon. Over the past 24 hours, 25 volcanic earthquakes and five volcanic tremors were recorded, ranging from three to 40 minutes in duration.
Kanlaon Remains Under Alert Level 3
Despite the heightened activity, Phivolcs maintains the volcano's alert level at 3. This signifies ongoing magmatic unrest and necessitates the evacuation of residents within a six-kilometer radius of the summit.
Safety Measures and Reminders
Phivolcs continues to advise against flying aircrafts near Kanlaon due to potential hazards. Residents in nearby areas should remain vigilant for possible dangers, including:
- Sudden explosive eruption
- Lava flow
