The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is making significant strides in its ambitious railway expansion plans, particularly for the Mindanao region. The feasibility study for the P100.64-billion Mindanao Railway Project (MRP) Phase 3, which will connect key cities in Metro Cagayan de Oro, is expected to be finalized by the first quarter of 2024.
This 54.8-kilometer inter-city passenger and cargo railway system will not only enhance connectivity but also stimulate economic growth in the region. The project is designed to link industrial and commercial centers, as well as major transportation hubs like Laguindingan International Airport, the Port of Cagayan de Oro City, the Mindanao Container Port, and various industrial estates.
The MRP Phase 3 is part of a larger, 1,544-kilometer railway network that aims to connect major cities across Mindanao, including Davao, General Santos, Cotabato, Zamboanga, and Surigao. This extensive railway system will revolutionize transportation and logistics in the region, facilitating the movement of goods and people.
The DOTr's commitment to expanding railway infrastructure is evident in its efforts to address the country's limited railway network compared to neighboring countries. By investing in projects like the MRP Phase 3 and the North-South Commuter Railway, the government aims to modernize the country's transportation system and improve the quality of life for Filipinos.
