A significant milestone in the decade-long case of Mary Jane Veloso was reached on Friday, December 6th, as the Philippines and Indonesia signed an agreement to repatriate the convicted drug courier.
The agreement, signed by Philippine Justice Undersecretary Raul T. Vasquez and Indonesian Minister of Legal Affairs Yusril Ihza Mahendra, marks a unique arrangement between the two countries as there's no existing treaty for the transfer of sentenced persons.
Vasquez expressed gratitude to the Indonesian government for their cooperation, highlighting the long and arduous journey to bring Veloso home. He also noted the symbolic timing of the agreement, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of Philippine-Indonesian friendship.
The repatriation is expected to facilitate the prosecution of Veloso's recruiters, who were convicted of qualified human trafficking and estafa. While no specific date has been set for the transfer, both countries aim to complete the process before Christmas.
Once back in the Philippines, Veloso will serve her sentence under Philippine laws and regulations. The possibility of granting clemency to Veloso was ruled out, as this decision rests solely with the Philippine President.
The agreement marks a significant step towards justice and closure for Mary Jane Veloso and her family.
