Davao Overtakes Manila as Philippines' Most Congested City: TomTom Traffic Index

  • Davao City Overtakes Manila as Philippines' Most Congested City
  • TomTom Traffic Index: Davao City Has Worst Traffic in the Philippines
  • Shocker: Davao City Ranked 8th Worst in Global Traffic Congestion

In a surprising turn of events, Davao City has surpassed Manila as the Philippine city with the worst traffic congestion, according to the 2024 TomTom Traffic Index. The annual report, released by the global transportation data company, placed Davao City at a dismal 8th place in the worldwide ranking of cities with the most congested city centers.

The study, which analyzed traffic data from 500 cities across 62 countries, found that Davao City motorists spend an average of 32 minutes and 59 seconds to travel 10 kilometers. This translates to a staggering 136 hours wasted in rush-hour traffic over the year. While this year's travel time is actually 30 seconds faster than in 2023, it was still enough for Davao to climb the rankings.

Manila, which previously held the unenviable title of the Philippines' most congested city, now sits in 14th place with a slightly faster average travel time of 32 minutes per 10 kilometers.  Adding to the list of traffic woes, Caloocan made its debut on the index, ranking 26th.

Globally, Barranquilla in Colombia claimed the top spot with the worst traffic, where drivers endure a 36 minute and 6 second journey for every 10 kilometers. Indian cities dominated the top rankings with Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Pune securing the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th positions, respectively. London rounded out the top five.

TomTom's analysis paints a concerning picture, revealing that 379 out of the 500 cities studied experienced slower average speeds in 2024 compared to the previous year.

"The combination of population and economic growth is putting significant strain on our transportation networks," explained Ralf-Peter Schäfer, vice president of traffic at TomTom. "Outdated infrastructure and inefficient road planning fail to keep pace with demand. Additionally, the surge in e-commerce has led to an increase in freight traffic, further complicating the situation."

Schäfer stressed the urgency of addressing this growing problem: "Without a shift towards more regulation and sustainable transportation options, we risk worsening congestion that impacts everyone in our cities."

This report serves as a wake-up call for Davao City and other urban centers in the Philippines to prioritize investments in efficient public transportation, improved infrastructure, and sustainable urban planning to combat the growing menace of traffic congestion.
