A Filipina tourist is recovering after undergoing spine surgery following a harrowing accident at a popular tourist spot in Taiwan. The woman was struck by a train while posing for a photo, highlighting the dangers of getting too close to railway tracks.

Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) Chairperson Atty. Cheloy Garafil confirmed the incident and assured the public that the tourist is now out of danger. "She still has to undergo further surgeries and medications, but the spine surgery was the most major procedure, and it was the last one performed. According to reports, she's out of danger," Garafil said in a Teleradyo Serbisyo interview on Thursday.

Surveillance footage captured the terrifying moment the woman, arms outstretched for a photo, was hit by a Taiwan Railway train. The impact threw her to the ground, narrowly avoiding being pulled under the train.

The incident occurred at a train station known for its picturesque scenery and the tradition of releasing sky lanterns. Garafil explained, "It's a train station, so the lantern release happens by the tracks. When the train arrives, everyone moves aside. Many tourists take pictures with the train in the background. Unfortunately, she was unlucky. When the train passed, it caught her because she had raised her arm."

Garafil emphasized that safety protocols are in place, but the excitement of the moment may have led the tourist to get too close to the tracks. The MECO head praised the travel agency for their swift action and attentiveness to the injured tourist. "They immediately took her to the hospital after the accident. We are very impressed with the travel agency that arranged their tour because they are focused on her well-being," she added.

The injured tourist is expected to need around two weeks to recover. This incident serves as a stark reminder to prioritize safety and be mindful of surroundings, especially in unfamiliar environments and near railway lines.
