Filipino billiards sensation Johann Chua expressed his surprise at being recognized by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) despite a challenging start to 2024.

The Bacolod native, known for his exceptional skills on the billiards table, shared that he had a tough time during the first quarter of the year. However, he managed to turn things around and capped off the year with a triumphant victory at the Hanoi Open 9-Ball Championship.

"I didn't expect this at all because my performance was really poor throughout the first quarter of 2024," Chua admitted. "But I just put my faith in God and enjoyed the process. I tried to be professional and I'm so grateful for the rapid progress I've made."

Chua's recent PSA award marks a significant milestone in his career. While he had previously received team honors in 2022 and 2023, this is his first individual recognition from the prestigious sportswriting body.

"I'm really happy because this is the first time I've received a PSA award as an individual," he said. "In 2022 and 2023, we received team awards, but this time it's an award for myself."

With his late-season success in 2024, Chua is looking forward to a busy year ahead, filled with various international competitions.

"We have many world championships to compete in this year; there are also individual events. The full schedule hasn't been released yet, but hopefully there will be a lot," he added.

Chua's journey from a challenging start to a triumphant end in 2024 serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes. His ability to overcome adversity and achieve success is a testament to his dedication and perseverance. As he prepares for more competitions in the coming year, the Filipino billiards champion is poised to continue making his mark on the international stage.
