Manila, Philippines - Former Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, who fled the country for seven years after being accused of graft and included in the Duterte drug watch list, has been granted a presidential pardon by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin announced that the President granted Mabilog's petition for executive clemency, citing the former mayor's "long-standing commitment to good governance" and the awards and recognition received by Iloilo City during his tenure. The pardon removes all penalties and disabilities resulting from his administrative case.
In 2017, Mabilog was dismissed from public service by the Office of the Ombudsman for violating the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act due to questionable wealth. He was charged with serious dishonesty and faced penalties including forfeiture of retirement benefits and perpetual disqualification from holding public office.
Mabilog, who returned to the Philippines in September 2024, has been facing criminal charges before the Sandiganbayan and the Lapu-Lapu City Regional Trial Court.
In 2016, former President Rodrigo Duterte publicly accused Mabilog of being a major drug protector and included him in a watch list of public officials involved in illegal drug activities. Mabilog has consistently denied these allegations.
Mabilog's lawyer, Jeric Jucaban, expressed gratitude to President Marcos for granting clemency to his client. He stated that the pardon represents a new chapter for Mabilog and his family.
