SYDNEY, Australia – In a surprise move, Nick Kyrgios is poised for a return to Davis Cup tennis after a five-year hiatus. Australian captain Lleyton Hewitt included the fiery 29-year-old in the team nominations for their upcoming tie against Sweden.
Kyrgios, known for his on-court antics and controversial past, last represented Australia in the Davis Cup in 2019. Since then, he has largely distanced himself from the competition, citing injuries and a lack of interest.
However, after undergoing wrist surgery and making his return to competitive tennis last week in Brisbane, Kyrgios appears to have had a change of heart. Despite a three-set loss to rising star Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in Brisbane, Hewitt has shown faith in Kyrgios's ability to contribute to the team.
"Nick is a unique talent, and we know what he can bring to the Davis Cup," said Hewitt. "He's shown a commitment to his recovery, and we believe he can be a valuable asset in Stockholm."
Kyrgios's inclusion adds another dimension to an already strong Australian team. World No. 8 Alex de Minaur will lead the charge, with Jordan Thompson and Thanasi Kokkinakis also selected. Australia reached the Davis Cup semifinals last year and will be aiming to go even further in 2025.
The tie against Sweden will be a challenging one, but Kyrgios's presence is sure to generate excitement and give Australia a boost. Whether he can recapture his best form remains to be seen, but his return to the Davis Cup fold is a significant development for Australian tennis.
