Washington, D.C. – A mid-air collision between a PSA Airlines regional jet and a Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk helicopter occurred Wednesday evening near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, prompting the grounding of all flights at the airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the incident, stating that the collision took place around 9 p.m. local time as the PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700, operating as American Eagle flight 5342 from Wichita, Kansas, was approaching Runway 33.  American Airlines acknowledged the incident, stating they were aware of reports involving their flight.  Details regarding the number of passengers aboard both the aircraft are not yet available.

Multiple sources, including an Army official, confirmed the Black Hawk's involvement to CBS News.  Following the collision, a small aircraft reportedly crashed into the Potomac River in the airport's vicinity, according to the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department. The D.C. Police Department confirmed a multi-agency search and rescue operation was underway in the river.

Reagan National Airport announced the halt of all takeoffs and landings following the incident, emphasizing that emergency personnel were responding on the airfield, though the terminal itself remained open. The Metropolitan Police Department stated they were assisting in the response, clarifying that the helicopter involved was not one of their own.  The U.S. Park Police aviation unit is leading the search and rescue efforts.
