Popular YouTuber Agon Hare, better known as Project Nightfall, has issued an apology after sharing an inaccurate story about Filipino chess prodigy Bince Rafael Operiano. Hare's viral post, which has since been deleted, depicted Operiano as a young boy who had to travel alone to Thailand for a chess competition in 2022 and sleep in the airport due to financial constraints.
However, Hare's audience quickly pointed out that the story was false. Operiano was, in fact, supported by the Philippine Sports Commission for his trip.
In a Facebook post, Hare acknowledged the error and took accountability for sharing the misleading information. He explained that his intention was to highlight the young chess player's determination, but admitted that the story was not entirely true.
"As we've been doing this for 5 years, every now and then, we too make mistakes and are grateful for the opportunity to learn from them," Hare wrote, expressing gratitude to his audience for holding him accountable.
The apology has sparked mixed reactions online. While some praised Hare for his humility and willingness to admit his mistake, others questioned the source of his information and his motives for sharing the story in the first place.
"This begs the question. Where did you get the info you initially shared? Or was it made up just to get people’s attention? And that if no one calls you out, you would have kept the story?" one user commented.
This incident highlights the importance of fact-checking and responsible content creation, especially for influencers with large audiences. While Hare's apology is a step in the right direction, it also serves as a reminder of the potential harm that can be caused by spreading misinformation.
