Quezon City 2nd District Representative Ralph Tulfo has issued a public apology after his vehicle was spotted using the exclusive EDSA busway, a lane reserved solely for buses, emergency vehicles, and select high-ranking officials, including the president, vice president, House speaker, and chief justice. The incident sparked public criticism, prompting Tulfo to address the matter and take full accountability for his actions.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Tulfo expressed his regret and apologized to the public, particularly to those who were inconvenienced or affected by the incident. Speaking in Filipino, he said, “I sincerely apologize to the public, especially those inconvenienced and affected by the recent incident related to my vehicle, which passed through the EDSA bus lane.”
Tulfo emphasized that he took full responsibility for the violation and clarified that no one in a position of authority was involved or invoked to evade accountability. “I just want to make it clear that there was no mention or use of the name of anyone in the position. There was no abuse of authority to escape accountability or be acquitted in this incident,” he explained. He added that he and his team accepted the traffic violation ticket without hesitation and settled the corresponding fine promptly.
As part of the consequences for the violation, Tulfo revealed that he would undergo a seminar, as required by traffic regulations. This move underscores his commitment to adhering to the rules and setting an example for the public.
The incident also drew the attention of Senator Raffy Tulfo, the congressman’s father, who publicly stated that he had ordered his son to apologize for the mistake. Senator Tulfo, known for his strong stance on accountability and public service, emphasized the importance of setting a good example, especially for public officials.
The EDSA busway was established to improve traffic flow and provide a faster and more efficient mode of transportation for commuters.
